FARMING IN THE BRITISH ISLES
Only about two out of every 100 people in the United Kingdom work in farms. But the farms produce about two thirds of the food needed by British people. The rest of the food is brought from other countries.
Many farms grow grains, such as barley and wheat. Others grow garden vegetables, such as carrots and tomatoes. Fruit include apples, pears and strawberries. Many farmers also keep poultry, such as chickens, and pigs on the farms. Cattle are raised in wet areas with plenty of grass. Much of the milk from cows is sold in the cities. Some milk is used to make cheese. Sheep are raises in hilly and mountainous areas.
